  1. Social Media How-To: Competitive Analysis

    Posted by Ryan Sleeper
    / January 13, 2013
Competitive analysis is one of the most difficult components of marketing due to the private nature of corporate data. How do you understand what is or isn’t working for your competitors before you try something similar yourself? Without private access to their reporting, you probably don’t. Many times, even creating simple industry benchmarks are nearly impossible because of inconsistent KPI definitions and inaccurate surveying. Google Analytics used to provide some great, industry-specific benchmarking reports, but the program was abandoned, leaving marketers with few reliable numbers to build strategies from.

In our first in a series of social media how-tos, we share a couple of social media measurement tools that will simplify your competitive analysis and provide insights that can be used to improve your own social media marketing efforts....

With 2012 behind I us, we here at OSMGuy.com wanted to personally thank all of our fans for sticking with us throughout the year. Throughout the year you have seen quite a few Monthly Social Media reviews. Again, thanks for all the great comments and feedback we have received regarding these posts. We work diligently to bring you great, fresh content in a not-so-mundane type of format that is both informative and entertaining. As 2013 begins we aim to bring you this and MORE! We are looking to bring you not only reviews of social media ideas in the market place, but more OSMGuy.com original content in the form of infographics, interactive graphs, interviews, and more. Our goal is to give you as much insight into the intersection of social media and sports as we physically can. Please, join us on this journey, but not as a passenger, more like a symbolic navigator. We are always welcoming to feedback and advice and our ears are always open to new ideas.

With that said, I want to bring you a little “year in review” for some great social media ideas you may have missed. Some of these I have covered in the past, others are new to OSMGuy.com. Here are 10 of my favorite social media ideas from this past year (give or take) in no particular order. Enjoy!

  3. Mid-Month Social Media In Sports Review: May 2012

This seems to be the year of the online reveal, as organizations are more apt to give exclusive first looks at new products, tour dates, game activities and lineups. Nike has been perfecting this with the release of their Nike+ Fuel band as well as their “social sneakers.” This past week saw the European futbol club Liverpool launch not only a new jersey line, but a new partnership via social media. Warrior, subsidiary of New Balance, known for their lacrosse gear makes the foray into “kit” production. To engage fans and generate buzz, their team threw out a social media integration blitz that included promotions on Facebook, YouTube, Tumblr, Twitter and Pinterest. Daniel McLaren of The Social Media & Sport Reference spelled out the strategy: “The approach that of hitting as many touch points as possible.” The key to this campaign lie with how well the integration ties into each other and how they leverage each platform to sell jerseys....

  4. Mid-Month Social Media In Sports Review: April 2012

Welcome to the second edition of the Mid-Month Social Media in Sports Review. As with every issue, I hope you are thoroughly entertained, enjoy the article, and maybe even learn a thing or two. Well, a lot has happened in social media in one month, as the ever-expanding industry sky rockets in ingenuity.

For starters, social media behemoth Facebook rolled out an entirely new page design for brands, effective March 30th. While this left some teams and organizations fretting over what to do, others took advantage of the great new additions and brand assets created through this design overhaul. The first and most obvious change is the new addition of the cover photo. This new asset gives the viewers of a page a new first impression, a moment of exclusivity with the brand. While some organizations decided to take the brand space to creative use (see Redbull, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Reebok) others decided to take a different approach. This involved using images that not only looked great, but were strategic in the messaging of their cover photo (see Tampa Bay Lightning, Nike). Tampa utilized the space to thank the fans for their support this past season and Nike explored the realm of product placement and advertising within the space....

  5. Mid-Month Social Media In Sports Review: March 2012

Welcome to the first edition of what I hope will be an informative and entertaining monthly periodical on the topic of social media and technology activations within sport. While I will do my best to bring you stories directly tied to sports, I may sprinkle in one or two from other industries that should be ripped and reapplied to our beloved industry. With that being said, I'm excited to bring you the first mid-month social media in sports review.

Brad Keselowski has never finished higher than 5th in America’s top racing circuit, the Sprint Cup series. Yet last month during NASCAR’s Super Bowl, the Daytona 500, he managed to garner over 100,000 Twitter followers in one night! On a night when one driver ran into a jet-fueled track dryer truck, setting the track ablaze, Brad stole the show. People can’t seem to remember who exactly won the rain and fire delayed race, but people remember that a man tweeted from his car. Brad, while waiting during the delays, tweeted updates - and even a picture! While most sport leagues go out of their way to banish the “feared” and often misunderstood communication platform, Brad took his interaction to the next level. This is the kind of experience and in depth perception fans crave, and Keselowski’s follower numbers are all that's needed to verify that....
