  1. NFL Interconference Records: AFC Versus NFC Year by Year

    Posted by Ryan Sleeper
    / December 19, 2011
Prior to the Jets Super Bowl III upset of the Baltimore Colts in 1969, the NFL had always been considered the dominant league to their AFL counterparts. It seems to me that some of those historical perceptions still linger today between the NFC and AFC, but the Kansas City Chiefs’ upset of the Green Bay Packers yesterday, a rematch of the first interconference game ever played (Super Bowl I), made me curious to know for sure which conference is the best in the NFL.

The following visualization was created using regular season interconference records of the AFC vs. NFC since the NFL merger in 1970, courtesy of the 2011 NFL Record and Fact Book....

  2. Proposed NFL CBA Helps Small Market Fans

    Posted by Ryan Sleeper
    / June 22, 2011
Yesterday, details of a new NFL CBA proposal from Commissioner Roger Goodell were leaked, and now that ESPN has confirmed the story, I would like to talk about how the proposal impacts fans of small market teams. Highlights of the proposed NFL CBA include:

    * 48% of all revenue goes to the players
    * Players become unrestricted free agents after four years of service
    * A rookie wage scale
    * Teams must spend close to 100% of the salary cap

As a small market fan, the point that stands out to me the most in the newest proposed version of the NFL CBA is that the salary floor would be raised from 90% to close to 100%. In order to reach the current salary floor, teams often inflate their salary number by stuffing it with line items such as player bonuses that they often never have to pay. Under the proposed NFL CBA, not only will teams be required to spend close to 100% of the salary cap, they will have to spend 100% of the cap in actual cash paid to players (versus fantasy accounting numbers)....

  3. A Conference Call with Roger Goodell and Clark Hunt

    Posted by Ryan Sleeper
    / May 5, 2011
Today, Clark Hunt, Chairman and CEO of the Kansas City Chiefs, as well as NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell, participated in a live conference call held exclusively for Chiefs season ticket holders. The 30-minute discussion, moderated by the voice of the Chiefs, Mitch Holthus, did not provide any specific online sports marketing information, but it did contain some additional perspective regarding some of the threats currently facing the NFL.

The entire call is now available on the Chiefs homepage, but it cannot be said whether a page will be created so this audio file can be accessed in the coming weeks or if a transcript will be made available. To be safe, and because I think much of this is worth sharing, I have provided my paraphrased notes of the call, along with some Online Sports Marketing Guy commentary....

  4. What Online Sports Marketers Can Learn From Herm Edwards

    Posted by Ryan Sleeper
    / April 2, 2011
You may be wondering what ESPN analyst, and former NFL Head Coach, Herm Edwards, can possibly teach us about online sports marketing. After all, this guy hasn’t even sent a single tweet since September 1st of last year. Despite his Twitter hiatus, all sports fans know Herm Edwards has plenty to say. Made most famous for his “you play to win the game” speech, Herm Edwards also dropped this gem of online sports marketing advice at a 2004 New York Jets press conference: Put your name on it.

  5. Marquette Coach Buzz Williams Uses Analytics to Reach Sweet Sixteen

    Posted by Ryan Sleeper
    / March 24, 2011
The NCAA Tourney’s Sweet Sixteen tips off tonight featuring many of basketball history’s usual suspects – Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, and North Carolina. As we have become accustomed to during sports’ greatest event, there are also a few unfamiliar faces – including the Marquette Golden Eagles. You may remember Marquette from their glory days when Dwayne Wade led them to the Final Four as members of Conference USA. Now they are in the Big East, where they finished eleventh in the regular season and made a second round exit in their conference tournament. So how does an unranked, 11-seed earn a Sweet Sixteen date with arguably the greatest college basketball program of all time, two-seeded North Carolina?
